This is where it all goes downhill: Shein™ is moving into brick and mortar stores…
Shall we talk about the disaster?
Yes, sure, it can be super convenient in certain situations. When you have Aunt Susan’s wedding coming up and you need to find an outfit that is not too expensive, because obviously you will never wear it again, we are the first to admit it can save the day. The issue is that for many people, Shein™ is not an emergency fix. It is a habit.
It is time to start thinking and being intentional about every single purchase you make. Because those “It is so cheap, it is amazing, I got fifteen items for the price of a coat at Z (you know who I mean) », we are done with that. We all know that half of those clothes you will never wear, and on top of that you will have the nerve to tell your sister « no » when she asks to borrow them. And the result is that your closet is full of things you never wear, yet you still have nothing to put on. Girls, we know.
The problem, Houston, is that environmentally, it is not great.
The fabrics are all synthetic. And everything is made in the Far Far Away Kingdom compared to our lovely, eternally cloudy Marne. Which means your order has to fly here. And the plane (please pretend to be surprised) pollutes. And besides the fact that your package travels more than you do, there is a good chance it gets lost. And if your winter coat shows up in June, the math is definitely not working out.
But wait, a moment of clarity.
If you already have lots of cheap items you never wear, then invest in a really nice piece you are sure to wear every day or almost every day. What do you think? Just think it through. This is not a Flash McQueen™ race.
Picture this. You are strolling downtown, looking for a beautiful jacket for the fall. You have a budget of about €100 and a fairly clear idea of the style you want. You do a first round of stores and find nothing. So you settle for the best of what you have seen. You get to the checkout and hear:
“€79.99 please. Card or cash?”
“Uh… well… just take my soul at this point.”
But at least you have a jacket, even if it is not the one.
The following week, surprise. Another jacket appears, and it is much closer to what you had in mind. But now it is eighty €89.99. And you are asking yourself: “What do I do? Do I buy it? I just bought one last week, but I like this one much better…”
That is what I mean by think carefully and be intentional with every purchase.
In plain terms, listen to your heart. If it is not love at first sight, put it back. Take a full tour of the shops, compare prices and styles before emptying your savings on a jacket you only half like.
Because right now, all you can do is cry it out.
And you are stuck with a not so great jacket.
